Food

Eating well during chemo is less about perfect choices and more about getting enough in, safely, on the days that are hard. Your care team's instructions always come first; these are starting points.

Right now

Set up your cycle to see suggestions for today's phase.

Infusion days
  • Eat a light meal 1-2 hours before; an empty stomach makes nausea worse.
  • Pack: crackers, rice cakes, a thermos of broth or ginger tea, ginger chews, a bland sandwich.
  • Sip fluids all day. Some drugs need extra hydration; ask your nurse how much.
  • Take anti-nausea meds on the schedule you were given, before nausea starts.
Rough days (the few days after)
  • Small amounts every 2-3 hours instead of three meals.
  • Cold or room-temperature foods smell less: yogurt, cold noodles, smoothies, boiled eggs, fruit cups.
  • Salty and starchy often tastes best: broth, rice, congee, toast, crackers, potatoes.
  • Ginger and lemon help many people; so does a little sour or tart.
  • Keep protein going even in small amounts: egg, tofu, yogurt, nut butter, shredded chicken in broth.
Nadir (lowest blood counts)
  • Everything cooked through. No raw or undercooked meat, fish, eggs, or sprouts.
  • Wash fruit and vegetables well; peel when you can.
  • Leftovers within 2 days, reheated until steaming.
  • Pasteurized dairy and juice only. Skip deli counters, buffets, and salad bars.
  • Check the Food safety tab for the full list.
Recovery and good days
  • This is when to rebuild: protein at every meal, vegetables, fruit, whole grains if your gut allows.
  • Cook extra and freeze single portions for the next rough stretch.
  • Try one new food at a time and note how it went under My foods.
  • A short walk after meals helps appetite and digestion.
